Weekly Talk with Mohanji: A Reflection (Part 6)

by Shaju Mangalam, India

Every Sunday, Mohanji’s weekly talk gives a new direction to life. His words often touch on different aspects of our daily lives, and when one tries to follow them with sincerity, small but steady changes begin to occur. This week’s talk was centred on a very simple but powerful message — “Be Lighter and Be Brighter.”

Mohanji began by explaining what it means to be lighter. According to him, every human being carries a lot of memories, emotions, and experiences from the past. Some of them may be pleasant, but many are filled with pain, disappointment, guilt, or anger. Over time, these experiences get stored within us, and we continue to hold on to them unconsciously. He said that this storage becomes a kind of emotional baggage that we carry wherever we go. It weighs us down, affects our thoughts, and limits our ability to experience peace and happiness.

He called this condition “emotional obesity.” Just like physical obesity affects our health and movement, emotional obesity affects our mental and spiritual growth. When our inner storage is full of old emotions, we have no space left for new learning, new experiences, or higher wisdom. Mohanji said that if we wish to progress spiritually or even live a balanced life, we must learn to clear this storage and make space within.

He explained that this clearing process is not about forgetting the past but about releasing the emotions connected to it. Every event that happens in life leaves an impression on the mind. When we repeatedly revisit those memories with attachment, the impressions become stronger. But when we observe them without judgment and let them go, they lose their hold over us. Mohanji reminded us that our true nature is pure, but it gets covered by layers of emotions, thoughts, and expectations. To become lighter means to remove these layers one by one.

Mohanji also said that life is reciprocal — what we give is what we receive. The present moment is the only truth, and the past is only a memory. If we continue to bring our past into the present, we lose the freshness of life. The energy of “now” gets wasted in worrying or regretting. When we start living fully in the present, we begin to experience a kind of natural brightness and clarity.

He gave a beautiful example. When a vessel is full of old, stale water, you cannot pour fresh water into it. The old water must be emptied first. Similarly, when our inner space is filled with emotional residues, there is no space for divine grace or new understanding. Once we become empty, pure wisdom naturally flows into us.

Mohanji then connected this concept with a profound spiritual truth — “Aham Brahmasmi,” which means, “I am the Universe” or “I am one with the Supreme Consciousness.” He explained that when a person lives without storage and without ego, consciousness becomes pure. At that point, we begin to realise that we are not separate from the universe. This realisation is not an intellectual idea but a direct experience of unity with all that exists.

He also pointed out that many people continually chase external achievements, relationships, or possessions, believing that these will bring them happiness. But real happiness does not come from outside. It comes when the mind is light and free from unnecessary burdens. He said, “The lighter you are, the brighter you become.” This brightness is not about physical appearance or external glow; it is the brightness of awareness — a clear, calm, and peaceful state of being.

This week’s talk was a gentle reminder that transformation begins with small steps. We do not need to make dramatic changes overnight. Even small efforts to stay in the present, forgive others, and release old emotions can make a big difference over time.

As I reflected on these thoughts later, I felt grateful for the clarity Mohanji brings through his words. His guidance is simple — not filled with heavy philosophy, but with practical wisdom that anyone can apply. The message “Be Lighter and Be Brighter” is not just a phrase; it is a way of living. It encourages us to keep our minds open, hearts free, and actions conscious.

Thank you, Mohanji!
